How it works
Coil Building is an ancient technique that's been used around the world for thousands of years! It's incredibly versatile and can be utilized to make designs or build up unique organic forms. Once you get comfortable with this foundational skill you can explore more complex ideas and have a starting point for all other ceramic projects. Your host, Shahane, will show you and your team the fundamentals of coil-building for a ninety-minute workshop. Clay is a living, breathing element. Learning to work with natural material to make unique and useful items is a therapeutic experience that creates space for you to connect. During this experience, you will learn how to handle clay and create coils with a professional ceramicist who is a co-owner of her own studio Village Clay in Brookline, MA. Each participant will receive a box in advance of this experience, including enough air-dry clay to make a few ceramic pieces and a beginners tool kit that can be reused to create additional pots, wall hangings, planters, and more after the experience is over.
